Sowing Wildflower Seed
 |
< back
A small amount of wildflower seed goes a long way. When hand broadcasting the seed, it is good to mix the seed with damp sand (4:1 sand to seed) to help prevent clumping and to provide even distribution. Rake the seed in lightly, being careful not to bury it too deeply (especially the smaller-seeded wildflowers), as this will prevent the delicate shoots from penetrating the soil surface. As a good rule of thumb, bury the seed no deeper than 1/8 - 1/4 of an inch. Tamp to firm the seedbed after seeding.
Leftover seed should be stored in a cool, dry place, as heat and humidity can cause loss of germination. Properly stored seeds should remain viable for planting the following year with minimal loss of germination. |
