Alkali sacaton is a native, warm-season bunchgrass.  It is primarily used for erosion control, range seeding, and revegetation.  The grass can tolerate high levels of salinity and a broad range of pH, therefore, is used on oil well pits and saline waste sites from power generating plants. Once established, this species will tolerate, drought, flooding, and silt deposition.  Survives in areas of the western United States and Mexico that receive 12-18 inches of yearly rainfall.  A firm weed-free seedbed is essential for establishing a stand of the Alkali sacaton. Medium soil fertility levels are best and avoid nitrogen applications during the first year to not encourage weed growth.  It produces abundant forage for livestock and wildlife when green, but does not cure as a palatable winter food source.
