Beaked Panicgrass is a native, warm-season, rhizomatous, perennial grass.  It can tolerate a wide range of habitats from well-drained sandy soil to waterlogged areas.  It ranges from New Jersey to Kansas south to Florida and Texas.  Beaked Panicgrass grows on moist to wet soils along freshwater marshes, swamps, and bottomlands that overflow occasionally. It will tolerate areas with up to 30-35% shade. Reproduction can occur via seeds, tillers, and rhizomes.  The most common method is by rhizomes, which form pure stands in large clumps. The best planting time is fall or early winter.  Planting with cool-season grasses is not recommended.

Livestock and wildlife graze on beaked panic grass from early spring to late fall but should be deferred during the summer to improve plant vigor and density.  Upland birds and some waterfowl utilize the seeds for food.  Beaked panic grass is also commonly used for erosion control in the revegetation of disturbed areas.
