A perennial cool-season, native bunchgrass that reproduces only by seed.  Established plants express a fibrous root system and are extremely drought tolerant.  They thrive in arid to semiarid regions with 8-14 inches of rainfall per year.  It can be found at elevations from 3300 to 9500 feet above sea level and prefers coarse-textured soils. Dormant planting in the fall with light seed coat scarification is the preferred seeding method.

Indian Ricegrass has many possible uses, but the seed from this grass is highly dormant thus limiting widespread use. It is used as a forage for domestic cattle, sheep, and horses.  It is preferred forage for Elk in all seasons while deer and antelope graze it in spring, late fall, and winter. The fibrous root system makes it desirable for erosion control but it is not effective in controlling the movement of sand dunes.

Indian Ricegrass Flour is marketed as a gluten-free food product.
