A native, tufted, cool season perennial bunchgrass common to plains, prairies, and foothills of the western United States.  Very drought tolerant and prefers excessively drained sands to fine sandy loams to coarse gravelly loam soils. Also known as Spear-grass. This species begins growth early in spring and goes dormant early to mid-summer.  It may green up again in the fall if soil moisture becomes adequate.  It is a desireable forage for elk inwinter and spring and deer in spring.  It is commonly used in revegetation of sandy sites as it is one of the first grasses to naturallly establish in that type of environment.  Needle and Thread is most commonly found in elevations from 3500-8500 feet above sea level and where average yearly rainfall is between 7 and 16 inches.
