Great Blue Lobelia is attaractive to bees and the hummingbirds are attracted to the nectar. It acts as a host plant to beneficial predator insects. This species is a herbaceous perennial with infrequently branched, erect stems.  Alternate leaves are toothed and narrowly oblong to elliptic to lancelate, or oblancelate.  This is most commonly found in swamps, and wetlands in the eastern half of the United States.

The iroquois used it as a cough medicine. It has also been used to soothe headaches and to fight colds, but it is a toxic plant if consumed in large quantities.
