Also known as Western Sloughgrass or Caterpillar Grass, American Sloughgrass is a native cool season annual or short-lived perennial. It is commonly used for wetland wildlife habitat. The seeds are a food source for waterfowl, birds, and small mammals.  Other uses include wetland restoration and erosion control plantings in seasonally wet areas such as ditches, stream banks, and freshwater shorelines.

American Sloughgrass performs best on clay soils with shallow water tables.  It thrives in soils saturated at or near the surface year around up to 4 inches deep.  Poorly drained, irrigated, and somewhat acidic to alkaline soils are preferred.  Full sun is a must for American Sloughgrass as it is intolerant of shade and seasonally dry soil in the summer.

The best time to plant is fall or as a dormant seeding to promote early spring development.
