What is Inoculant?
Inoculant is a naturally occurring, beneficial Rhizobium bacteria applied to legume seeds (such as alfalfa, clover, and vetch) at planting. These bacteria form a partnership with the plant, allowing it to “fix” nitrogen from the air and convert it into a usable form. This nitrogen supports the legume itself and can also contribute to nitrogen availability in the surrounding soil for neighboring plants.
What Inoculant Does
It’s important to understand what inoculant does and what it does not do. Inoculant does not improve seed germination. Germination depends on factors like seed quality, soil moisture, temperature, and proper planting conditions. Even without inoculant, a seed can germinate and plants will grow.
Where inoculant makes a difference is after the plant begins growing. Once established, the bacteria attach to the plant’s roots and form nodules. Inside these nodules, nitrogen fixation occurs, supplying the plant with a steady, natural source of nitrogen while gradually enriching the soil over time. This process can improve plant vigor, reduce the need for added fertilizer, and support long-term soil health.
Using inoculants can be especially beneficial in fields where the correct bacteria is not currently present or where legumes have not been grown recently.
