Pasture Advice

Q. Hi, I am looking for a micture of seed to make high quality hay for horses. The pastures are grazed very little, hay is primary use. I live just outside of Kansas City Mo. Thanks

Michael,

I would recommend a mixture of Timothy, Orchargrass, and Smooth Bromegrass. The mix should be planted at a rate of 12 lbs/acre and the cost is $1.55/lb. I would also suggest 1 bushel of oats/acre as a nurse crop. The cost for oats is $8.32/bushel. I can offer shipping quotes once I know the amount of seed needed. Fertilizer will be necessary to maintain maximum production from year to year, especially after haying or heavy grazing. Thank you!
